Tantabiddi North Reef Break

Meet the site

Tantabiddi North Reef is a break in the fringing reef about 4.5 nautical miles north of the ramp, where the lagoon connects to the ocean. Snorkel Spots rates it as an advanced site because of depth, access, open ocean conditions, swell and surge, but in calm weather it gives snorkellers and divers a taste of outer-reef clarity and structure without the long run south.

The bottom is coral and rock from about 5 m, falling beyond 15 m seaward. Reef fish including convict tangs and fusiliers school along the edges, and nudibranchs, echinoderms and octopus are found among the coral. Turtles, reef sharks and manta rays are regular visitors, and humpback whales migrate past from June to October.

Because the break drains the lagoon, currents and rips can be strong. Divers should use a live boat, carry a DSMB and plan on calm days only. It is best suited to experienced snorkellers and divers with their own boat.

The north-western reef was affected by the 2025 marine heatwave; coral condition may be degraded.

Planning a Cape Range day: the national park's lagoon sites stretch about 50 km along Yardie Creek Road from Tantabiddi to Osprey and Sandy Bay, all within the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Coast. The reef crest sits a few hundred metres to a couple of kilometres offshore, enclosing a lagoon of sand, seagrass and coral bommies, and a series of sanctuary zones (look but don't take) protect the best-known snorkel areas. There are no shops, fuel or air fills in the park, so bring water, food, sun protection and reef shoes from Exmouth. The Milyering Discovery Centre has current information on conditions and zones. Mornings are usually calmer, clearer and cooler than afternoons, and checking the tide chart is essential for the shallower sites.
