Meet the site
Tedesco Reef is the Seaford member of the family of concrete-module artificial reefs the Victorian Fisheries Authority laid on the eastern side of Port Phillip to give anglers somewhere to fish and fish somewhere to live on the sand plains. It sits in 10-11 m of water about 2 km off Seaford, laid out in clusters inside a rectangle of four pallet-ball markers, and is built of the same cast concrete modules and reef balls as the Aspendale reef to the north. The reef is named for Neil Tedesco, a local diver and fisher who died in a diving accident in 2009 at the age of 31, and the naming gives the site a place in the local diving community beyond its fishing purpose. Underwater it behaves like every hard structure on the bay's sand: within a few seasons the modules were coated in sponges, ascidians, hydroids and algae and are now home to snapper, leatherjackets, wrasse, old wives, boarfish, red mullet, bearded rock cod, long-finned pike and clouds of baitfish, with octopus and small crustaceans in the voids and flathead and rays on the surrounding sand. As a dive it is flat, shallow and easy, which makes it a good first boat dive or night boat dive for open-water divers, and it can be combined with Tyre Reef and the Aspendale reef for a run up the coast from Patterson River. It is little dived except by clubs and photographers interested in colonisation, and heavily fished, so line and hooks on the modules and boats overhead are the practical concerns.
