Meet the site
Tenements 2, or T2, is the more dramatic of Heron's two Tenements sites. Divers descend the mooring to about 15 m, where a coral plateau around 12 m wide hides the main feature: a wall that drops to about 18 m, with large, flat bommies at the corner of the plateau that are excellent places to look for nudibranchs. The wall is the real attraction. On the incoming tide, nutrient-rich water pushes up against it and shoals of fish congregate to feed, drawing in grey reef sharks, barracuda and mackerel. Marine life writers describe it as a drift towards Shark Ledge, and the resort lists the Tenements among its top ten dives for this combination of schooling fish and sharks. The dive is usually run as a relaxed drift: the incoming tide carries divers along the wall towards Tenements 1, where the dive can finish on the T1 mooring or with a pickup. Divers should be comfortable with moving water and staying with the group, although the current is usually moderate rather than strong. T2 is a good site for Open Water divers with a few dives' experience and for photographers who want both wide-angle schooling scenes and macro subjects on the flat bommies. It is one of the best places on Heron Reef to see grey reef sharks reliably. The Tenements pair is most rewarding when dived on consecutive days on different tides, giving two very different impressions of the same stretch of wall. Remember that the plateau hides the wall from the mooring, so newer divers should follow the guide closely on the first swim to the edge.
