Meet the site
The Caves is one of Sunreef's four core local sites and one of the shallowest dives on the Gneering Shoals. Sunreef describes a shallow ledge that drops 1-3 m to a sandy bottom, with a maximum depth of only 12 m, covered in seaweeds and marine life – 'a beautiful spot for divers of all levels, even those who are training'. GoodDive lists 'The Cave' at 10-12 m with interesting ledges, gutters and swim-throughs.
Despite the name, there are no true caves – the 'caves' are undercuts and overhangs along the ledge, and short swim-throughs where boulders lean together. These overhangs give the site its life: wobbegongs rest under them, crayfish and bullseyes crowd into the darker recesses, and large schools of surgeonfish move along the ledge. Sunreef notes that rays visit the ledge to be cleaned by small fish, and turtles are regular. GoodDive adds pelagic fish and leopard sharks from October to May.
The shallow depth means long bottom times, and the simple layout – follow the ledge, return along the top – makes navigation easy. It is a staple for Open Water training and a relaxed second dive for experienced divers, and a good place to look for nudibranchs on the algae-covered rock.
In a northerly or easterly swell the shallowness means some surge, but the site is generally forgiving and is often chosen when conditions rule out deeper reefs. Night dives here, when run, reveal crayfish, octopus and sleeping fish in the overhangs. Because it is shallow and close to the other inner-reef sites, the Caves is also a sensible choice for the second dive of a Brisbane double.
