Meet the site
The Grotto is a small coastal sea cave on the east side of the island, a short drive from The Settlement and just before the golf course near the resort. The Tourism Association describes it as a mini cave with a mix of sea and fresh water in its pool, with crystal-clear turquoise water, a sandy floor and a sunlit entrance, reached by a walk of only about 30 m from the road.
It is not a scuba site. The pool is small and enclosed, and it is a place for a swim, a snorkel and photographs rather than a dive. Its interest lies in the geology: like Christmas Island's many larger caves, it was dissolved from the island's limestone, and it shows on a small scale what happens throughout the island's karst – fresh groundwater seeping from the rock and mixing with seawater that enters through the cave's connection to the ocean. The resulting halocline can make the water shimmer. Small fish and crabs live in the pool.
