Meet the site
The Point at the southern end of Agincourt Reef No. 4 is described by Silverseries and Poseidon as an excellent site with magnificent coral cover. The key attraction is the fish: large red bass and Goldman's sweetlips school around the point, with cruising barracuda and big-eye trevally in the current. The reef slopes and steps down from around 5 m to 25 m at the point. Its coral cover is outstanding – a mix of branching, plate and massive corals with soft corals on the more exposed parts – and it hosts fairy basslets in huge numbers, turning the water orange over coral heads. Maori wrasse patrol the reef slope, and coral trout sit motionless on the coral waiting to ambush smaller fish. The schools are the highlight. Red bass gather in large groups near the point, Goldman's sweetlips hang in formation under overhangs, and big-eyed bream (big-eye emperor) school in the shelter of the slope. Barracuda and big-eye trevally circle off the point, and grey reef sharks patrol along the edge. Because it is a point, current can wrap around the reef, especially on spring tides. Guides typically run the dive as an out-and-back from the mooring, going deeper on the outward leg and returning shallower. In stronger currents the dive may be converted to a drift. It is best suited to divers comfortable in some current, although in calm conditions it is accessible to open water divers. Visibility averages around 20 m and can reach 30 m. The Point is a great choice for divers who want to see large schools of fish and healthy coral in one dive, and it rewards photographers with dramatic scenes of schooling fish against coral slopes.
