Meet the site
The Spit is a Muiron site described by Salt & Charcoal as dropping to about 18 m off a rocky ledge, attracting baitfish and grey nurse sharks, and by Travel2Next as having swim-throughs along a ledge where grey nurse sharks and turtles can be seen, with drift diving over coral and sponges.
The ledge forms a reef edge along which tidal current carries plankton and baitfish, which in turn draw predators. Grey nurse sharks — more usually associated with the Navy Pier in winter — are the headline animal here, resting in the swim-throughs, and turtles are frequently seen. Coral and sponge cover along the ledge provides colour and habitat for reef fish.
The dive can be done as a moored circuit or a gentle drift depending on the tide, and suits Open Water divers comfortable with some current, with Advanced certification helpful for the deeper section. The 2025 marine heatwave affected coral at the Muirons and Dive Ningaloo has paused trips; check with other operators.
About the Muirons: North and South Muiron are two low, uninhabited limestone islands about 15 km north-east of the tip of North West Cape, protected within the World Heritage-listed Muiron Islands Marine Management Area. They are reached only by boat, which has kept the surrounding reefs relatively untouched. The waters are visited by dolphins, dugong, pilot whales and, from July to October, migrating humpback whales, and turtles nest on the island beaches in summer. The islands are well known for strong currents and changeable conditions, so dives are always chosen on the day by the skipper according to wind, swell and tide, and a day on the Muirons usually combines two sites with lunch on the boat in the lee of the islands.
