Meet the site
The Streets is one of the more evocatively named sites on Deep 6 Diving Jervis Bay's list. It is named for boulder formations 'much the size of houses' arranged in an almost uniform pattern, so that the sand between them forms a grid of streets. Divers swim along the avenues with rock walls on either side, turning into cross-streets as they go – a distinctive, almost urban underwater landscape.
Sponge growth covers the boulders, and gorgonians and sea whips line the sandy bottom at their bases, adding colour to the streetscape. The site is especially known for giant cuttlefish in winter, when the animals gather to breed and will follow groups of divers around, displaying their shifting colours. Other life is typical of the Jervis Bay entrance: leatherjackets, wrasse, yellowtail and blue groper around the rocks, and rays and flathead on the sand.
It is best approached as a guided boat dive with the operator who uses the name. The grid-like layout makes it relatively easy to navigate once divers understand the pattern, and the moderate structure means it is likely suitable for Open Water divers, but depths should be confirmed with the operator. It is included here because it is a named, regularly dived site in the region and a winter highlight for cuttlefish encounters. Treat the cuttlefish with respect – do not touch or chase them.
