Meet the site
The Wedge sits on the southern edge of the channel that separates sections of Opal Reef, and Scuba IQ rates it one of the best sites on Opal in terms of coral and fish life. Channel-edge sites on the outer reef share a formula: water flowing through the gap brings plankton, which feeds dense coral and attracts large numbers of fish. The reef along the channel edge is covered in healthy hard and soft corals that thrive in the flow – plate and branching corals, sea fans and soft corals leaning into the current. Fish life is abundant: schools of fusiliers and surgeonfish, trevally and mackerel hunting along the edge, and reef sharks cruising into the channel. Closer to the reef, look for sweetlips, coral trout and groper under ledges, and turtles resting in the lee. Because of its location on a channel, current is the main consideration. Dives are usually timed for slack water or a gentle flow, and guides keep the group on the edge rather than in the channel itself. When the current is running, the dive may be conducted as a drift. Scuba IQ does not publish depths; most of the dive is likely to be in the 10–18 m band. Visibility is typically 15–30 m and often excellent on an incoming tide. The Wedge suits divers comfortable with some current who want to see Opal at its fishiest.
