Meet the site
The Torpedo Tubes take their name from the concrete remnants of a naval torpedo-testing facility on the northern shore of Jervis Bay, inside Point Perpendicular. The Navy has used Jervis Bay for training and weapons trials for more than a century, and the structures are a visible reminder of that history on a coastline that is still Defence land.
McFadyen admits he had not dived it himself but notes that everyone tells him it is very good, that it is protected from northerly winds and seas, and – memorably – that the fish here are very aggressive and have been known to attack divers and their boats. The culprits are usually swarms of one-spot pullers and sweep, habituated to being fed, which crowd around divers and nip at hair and exposed skin. It is more comical than dangerous, but it gives the site its reputation. Beyond the fish, the reef supports blue groper, cuttlefish and sponge-covered boulders, with depths from about 8 m to 25 m. The Currarong Community Association lists 'The Tubes' among the bay sites reached via Long Beach when the range is open.
The site is sheltered, moderate in depth and easy to navigate, so it suits Open Water divers and makes a good second dive or a fallback in northerly weather. Published detail on the precise layout is thin, so confidence is moderate. Divers should not feed the fish, and boats should anchor clear of the historic structures. Point Perpendicular's caves and sponge gardens lie just to the east for more adventurous dives.
