Meet the site
Towradgi Point is a low rocky headland separating Towradgi and Corrimal beaches in Wollongong's northern suburbs. With an ocean pool, a park and a car park right on the point, it is one of the most convenient shore dives in the city and is used by local divers when the sea is flat.
The reef lies close to the platform: within 50 m of the entry gutter the rock slopes to sand at about 15 m. The habitat is typical kelp-and-boulder Illawarra reef with ledges and cracks. Wobbegongs rest under the overhangs, blue groper cruise the reef, and morwong and leatherjackets are common. Port Jackson sharks gather in winter, cuttlefish in the cooler months, and eastern rock lobsters and nudibranchs reward a careful look in the cracks. Visibility is typically 5–10 m.
The main hazard is surge on the rock platform, particularly on a rising tide with any east or south-east swell, and the algae-covered rock is slippery. Towradgi Creek enters the sea just to the north, so water quality and visibility deteriorate after heavy rainfall. Given those constraints, the site is best on a calm winter day at low to mid tide. It will never match Bass Point for variety, but it is a handy, low-effort dive for Wollongong-based divers, and it makes a good venue for a quick evening or night dive in settled conditions. Its proximity to United Divers at Fairy Meadow means fills and advice are only a couple of kilometres away, and the park setting with toilets and a pool makes it family-friendly for non-diving companions.
