South West Rocks' town beaches — Little Bay, Horseshoe Bay and Front Beach — along with Gap Beach a short drive south in Hat Head National Park, are not destination dive sites in the way Fish Rock or Green Island are, but they fill an important practical role as easy, no-boat-required entry points for snorkelling, confidence-building shore dives and instructor check-out dives. Little Bay and Horseshoe Bay sit within the town itself, both sheltered small sandy coves with rock at their margins that hold small reef fish, occasional rays and the same juvenile fish assemblages found on the nearby purpose-named reefs like Ladies Reef, which lies just off the Horseshoe Bay headland and is the more serious dive option in this cluster. Front Beach is the main town swimming beach and is used more for snorkelling around its rocky points than as a scuba destination. Gap Beach, within the national park south of town near Smoky Cape, is closer to Green Island and has slightly better rock structure at its southern end, making it a reasonable option for a shore-based look at similar habitat to the boat-access island nearby, though without the grey nurse shark aggregation that draws divers to Green Island by boat. None of these beaches offer the depth, current or big-animal drawcards of the area's headline sites, and they are best understood as accessible, family-friendly water access points — useful for a first snorkel with children, an easy warm-up dive before a Fish Rock trip, or a place for visiting divers without their own boat to get in the water on a day when charters are not running. Water clarity and marine interest are both modest compared with the boat sites, and none of the four should be treated as a bucket-list dive destination in their own right.
