Meet the site
Troppo's is a Divers Den site on Norman Reef, and the operator's description makes it clear that this is a site for looking closely. Troppo's is abundant in nudibranchs and pipefish, and razorfish burrow into the sand, diving head-first into it when approached. The shallow bay suits both novice divers and snorkellers, and more experienced divers can follow the reef wall around the northern edge to deeper areas. It is a site of two halves. The bay is calm, sheltered and shallow, with coral patches over sand, and it is here that the small animals are concentrated: nudibranchs of many species on the coral and rubble, banded and ringed pipefish in the gaps, and razorfish hovering vertically above the sand before disappearing into it. Anemonefish, damsels, gobies and blennies add colour, and turtles are common across Norman. The wall around the northern edge offers something different, with steeper coral, more fish in the water column and the chance of reef sharks and larger schools. The contrast makes Troppo's a good site for a mixed group, and a very good one for macro photographers, who can spend a whole dive in a few square metres of the bay. At night the bay is excellent for crustaceans and hunting cuttlefish. Troppo's is one of the fifteen Norman moorings listed by Australian Traveller and is among the most consistently rewarding for small life. Visibility in the bay is typically 15-20 m, and a slow pace with a good torch, even by day, reveals far more than a quick lap would.
