Meet the site
Turtle Bay is a small bay at the edge of a major reef gap on the Sister reefs off Tongue Reef, visited by Wavelength Reef Cruises. Its stars are resident green sea turtles; Wavelength's guides have named some of them, including Friendly Girl and Lucky, and the turtles are regularly seen grazing or resting in the bay. The bay's position at the edge of a reef gap gives it lots of water flow, which brings plankton and clear water and supports healthy coral. It also means unpredictable encounters with larger animals: Wavelength mentions hammerhead sharks, sea snakes and occasional tiger sharks. The site lies in a low-impact reef area with exclusive operator access, so visitor numbers are limited. The turtles are the main attraction. Green turtles feed on algae and seagrass and are often relaxed around snorkellers who approach slowly and keep their distance. Watching them graze, surface to breathe and glide over the reef is one of the highlights of a Port Douglas reef trip. Because of the water flow and exposure, Turtle Bay is not used during large swells. No depth figures are published; the snorkel area is shallow. It is distinct from Turtle Bay on Agincourt Reef No. 2, which is a dive site on the Quicksilver/Poseidon roster. The site suits snorkellers of all levels on calm days. Scuba divers on a private charter would find a bay with healthy coral, water movement and a good chance of big-animal encounters. Wavelength is a snorkel-only operator whose marine biologists guide in-water tours and give reef talks; its skipper chooses three sites each day from the company's exclusive moorings according to wind and tide, so a particular site is never guaranteed. Scuba divers wanting to dive the Sister reefs need a private charter, and because the site names are Wavelength's own, other operators may not recognise them.
