Meet the site
The Two Fold Bay was a 22 m, 40-ton steel fishing trawler that struck a reef south-west of Alkimos in 1997, making her, according to divingwawrecks, the most recent shipwreck off the metropolitan coast at the time. She lies about 4 nautical miles north-west of Mindarie Marina in about 11 m.
The fractured hull rests on its starboard side against a reef ledge. Wreckage is scattered to the west over sand and kelp-covered reef, including the wheelhouse, outriggers and mast, so the dive combines a small modern wreck with reef exploration. Ledges and reef around the site offer more to see, and the Marine Life Network notes colonising species on the hull; it describes the vessel as 200 tons and lists 6–12 m.
Fish life includes buffalo bream, wrasse, old wives, bullseyes and sweep, with lobsters in the reef.
The site lies about 200 m east of a line of breakers, which reduces visibility compared with other offshore sites. Choose a day with swell under 1 m. The Two Fold Bay suits Open Water divers wanting a short, shallow wreck dive, and it combines well with the Eglinton or the Conference. As a small, relatively recent wreck, it also shows how quickly steel colonises on this coast: within a few decades the hull has become a reef in its own right. Carry a cutting tool, as fishing line snags on the outriggers.
Water temperatures on this coast range from about 17–18 °C in late winter to 22–23 °C in late summer; a 7 mm wetsuit with a hood suits most of the year.
