Meet the site
Undine Reef lies off Cape Tribulation in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, west of St Crispin Reef, and is topped by a small sandy cay where visitors can step ashore. Visit Daintree describes it as about 25 minutes offshore from Cape Tribulation, with shallow depths and calm conditions suited to all skill levels, and Ocean Safari runs eco-certified half-day tours there with low passenger numbers. From Port Douglas, Sailaway visits Undine or neighbouring Mackay Reef on its luxury sailing days. The reef is a snorkelling destination first. Coral gardens surround the cay in shallow water, with hard and soft corals, giant clams and plenty of reef fish. Sea turtles – green and hawksbill, often large – are frequent visitors, and eagle rays and reef sharks are sometimes seen. Sailaway also mentions seasonal whales, dolphins and reef sharks around the cays. The sand cay is part of the appeal: a patch of white sand in the middle of the reef, ideal for photos and views across to the Daintree coastline. Birds use the cay, so visitors should keep to the sand and avoid disturbing any nesting birds. Visibility is generally good in the dry season (May–October), when the sea is calmer, but as a reef closer to the coast than the ribbon reefs it can be affected by river plumes after heavy rain. Depths are shallow; operators do not publish maximum depths. One secondary source claims Undine is reached almost exclusively by liveaboard; that is not correct – it is a regular day-trip destination from Cape Tribulation and Port Douglas.
