Meet the site
Voodoo is one of the best deep reef dives in southern Sydney and one of the few sites that the St George Scuba Club treats as a regular. It lies off Potter Point, east of the surf break at Boat Harbour on the Kurnell Peninsula, right beside the Cronulla sewage treatment works – which is why it was ignored for years. Once the plant was upgraded to secondary treatment in the early 2000s, the water cleared and the reef proved outstanding, with visibility now usually better than 20 m. The reef extends south for about 1.1 km from the surf break. Its profile is simple: a flat reef top with small cracks, a small wall of a metre or two, and then a quickly sloping reef down to sand at 28 m. The eastern section has large boulders along an east–west reef edge; the western section is more complex, with many large boulders, small gullies and overhangs. What sets Voodoo apart is the fixed life. The sea whips, sea tulips and especially the gorgonians – in every colour – are more abundant than at almost any other Sydney site. Fish life is typical of deep Bate Bay reefs: silver sweep, one-spot pullers and yellowtail in schools, black reef and six-spined leatherjackets, eastern blue devilfish under the overhangs and even on the sand, fiddler rays, angelsharks, serpent eels and Port Jackson sharks in winter. McFadyen has also recorded a big-bellied seahorse on a sea tulip and small lionfish. A slight westward current is normal. Nearby Xanadu Reef, 350 m away, is deeper again, and the pair make a fine double for a private boat out of Port Hacking. McFadyen calls Voodoo an excellent dive for the more experienced diver – it suits Advanced divers comfortable at 25 m with good buoyancy for photographing gorgonians.
