Meet the site
Waitpinga Beach is included on this region's list, but it is not a dive site. It is a long, wild surf beach in Newland Head Conservation Park, between Victor Harbor and Cape Jervis, backed by rolling dunes and cliffs with views to Kangaroo Island and across Encounter Marine Park. The park is popular for surfing, fishing, bushwalking and birdwatching, with two campgrounds (Waitpinga and the Sand Dunes campground) offering toilets and barbecues. South Australia's national parks service states plainly that, because of strong rips and hidden gutters, the park's beaches are not suitable for swimming. The beach faces directly into the Southern Ocean swell, and surf is present almost every day. Rock fishers at the ends of the beach are regularly warned about waves. Under the water, the sandy surf zone offers little of interest to divers, and the rocky ends are exposed to heavy swell. There is no documented dive at Waitpinga, and none of the dive guides consulted lists it. Divers visiting the area should head back to Encounter Bay, where the Bluff, Whale Bones, Black's Reef and Wright Island offer sheltered diving on northerly days, or to Second Valley and Rapid Bay on the gulf side when the south coast is rough. Waitpinga is best enjoyed from the sand, the surf or the coastal walks. Surfers use the break year-round, and rescues are not uncommon here.
