Meet the site
West End is a garden reef at the western tip of Agincourt Reef No. 2 and the site to choose if you enjoy swim-throughs. The Silverseries and Poseidon descriptions note that it has the largest swim-through caves in the area, and that a very large humphead Maori wrasse is a frequent visitor. The reef is shallow – most of the dive is spent between about 5 and 15 m – and is made up of large coral heads and ridges that have grown together to form arches, tunnels and short caverns. Light streams through gaps in the roofs, and the walls inside are lined with encrusting sponges, soft corals and sheltering fish: soldierfish, bigeyes, cardinalfish and the occasional coral trout or potato cod tucked into the shade. The swim-throughs are short and open, with an exit always visible, so they suit recreational divers with good buoyancy; there is no need for any overhead training. Between the caves the reef forms a colourful garden of hard corals where blue fusiliers swarm, parrotfish and surgeonfish graze, and trout sit on coral heads waiting to ambush smaller fish. The Maori wrasse often shadows divers throughout the dive – it is a large, curious animal and should be admired rather than touched or fed. West End is typically visited when the trade winds allow access to the western end of the reef. Visibility averages around 15 m and occasionally reaches 25 m; it is lower than on the outer face because the site is more sheltered, but the shallow depth keeps colours bright. The dive suits divers of all levels who can control their buoyancy, and it is a favourite with photographers for light-beam shots through cave openings. Take care with fins and gauges inside the swim-throughs to avoid breaking coral, and let the guide lead the way through the larger passages.
