Wigram Island is one of the English Company's Islands, a chain of islands stretching north-west from the Gove Peninsula toward the Wessel Islands. It is mentioned by the Marine Life Network as a camping base used by Gove dive and fishing operators for trips to the offshore islands and reefs.
No dive-site-level description of Wigram Island itself has been published. Regionally, the English Company's Islands are surrounded by fringing coral reefs and channels where tidal streams concentrate fish, and the water tends to be clearer than the western Top End. The appeal of a Wigram Island trip is remoteness and the chance to dive reefs that very few people have seen. The drawbacks are the long boat run, variable conditions in the trade-wind season, crocodiles, stingers and total self-reliance – the nearest chamber is in Darwin by aeromedical evacuation.
It suits experienced, self-sufficient divers on an organised expedition with a local skipper. Planning should include contingency days for weather, since the trade wind can pin boats in island anchorages for several days at a time, and all food, water and fuel must be carried from Nhulunbuy.
