Meet the site
Wild Side West, which Divers Den also calls the Wild West, is the most adventurous of the Norman Reef Wild Side moorings, and the operator describes it frankly as an unpredictable site. Its centrepiece is a coral tower called Bob's Bommie, which rises alongside the right-hand wall and drops deeper than the surrounding reef. The wall to the left continues along the main reef, and scattered bommies in deeper water give advanced divers more to explore. Bob's Bommie is listed as a separate site by Cairns Dive Adventures, and it is the reason most divers come here: a tall, isolated coral tower that draws fish from the surrounding water, with schooling fusiliers and snapper around its upper sections, reef sharks and trevally patrolling its base, and a covering of hard and soft corals, fans and whips that changes with depth. The unpredictability comes from the site's exposed position on Norman's weather side, where current and surge can change quickly with the tide and wind. On a calm day with a gentle current it is superb, with good visibility and plenty of large fish, but it demands attention to depth, gas and current, and is not a site for novices. Divers should stay with the guide, carry a surface marker and be prepared to abort if conditions deteriorate. The deeper bommies are best left to divers with an Advanced certification and experience in current. Visibility is often excellent, frequently better than 20 m, reflecting its position close to the outer edge of the reef. For experienced divers on a liveaboard trip it is one of the highlights of Norman.
