Wistari Reef is the large reef immediately west of Heron Island, separated from it by Wistari Channel, and its eastern edge forms a steep wall that is one of the most dramatic features close to the resort. Wistari 1 is the shallower of the two moored wall sites: the mooring sits in 18 m, and the wall drops steeply below it before flattening out at about 25 m. The top of the wall is covered with thriving branching coral, which supports abundant fish. On the wall itself, nudibranchs and moray eels are common, and patient divers will find plenty of stonefish and scorpionfish camouflaged on the reef. The drop-off into the channel means that encounters in the blue are unpredictable: pelagic fish, turtles, rays and sharks pass along the edge. Marine life writers describe the wider Wistari Reef wall as ranging from staghorn-dominated shallow coral gardens down to deeper walls beyond 30 m, making it a varied area that the dive team can use in different ways. Wistari 1 suits divers with Advanced certification or good experience, since depth and channel currents both need managing. It pairs naturally with Wistari 2, a deeper dive at the base of the same wall, and with Three Rocks on the Heron side of the channel. Plan the dive with the channel tide in mind and listen closely to the briefing.
