Wobbegong Bay is a small rocky bay at South Durras, a short drive north of Batemans Bay. Spirit Divers' site guide rates it Intermediate, with a maximum depth of 15 m, best in westerly winds and suitable for day or night diving. It describes a rocky bottom with lots of gutters and overhangs to explore and a lovely night dive in the right conditions. The Marine Life Network lists it as a boat dive at 15 m with gutters and overhangs, small sharks, morwong, bream, blue groper and wrasse, and also notes it as a night dive.
The name reflects the resident wobbegong sharks that lie under the ledges and in the gutters. Port Jackson sharks and occasional crested horn sharks are also found here, particularly in the cooler months. Fish include red morwong, bream, blue groper and several wrasse species, with schools of sweep and yellowtail over the reef. At night octopus, cuttlefish, crabs and shrimps emerge, and sleeping fish tuck into the ledges.
The site suits Open Water divers who are comfortable with a rocky entry, and it is a good choice when a westerly wind has flattened the sea. Its gutters make navigation straightforward: follow one out and return along another. It is less known than the Black Rock and Tollgate Islands boat sites, so divers usually have it to themselves. Coordinates here are approximate and should be confirmed from the South Durras entry point. On a night dive, mark the exit with a light on shore, because the rocky coastline looks much the same in the dark.
