Wonderland is a Merimbula boat dive that the Marine Life Network describes as the prettiest reef dive in the area, and pretty sheltered, with a maximum depth of 35 m. Its features include kelp-covered ledges, sponges, sea fans, sea squirts and good fish life. The name reflects the colour of the deeper reef.
The reef steps down in ledges from kelp-covered shallows into deeper water where sponges and gorgonian sea fans in reds, oranges and yellows cover the rock, along with sea squirts and ascidians. Such growth is characteristic of the Sapphire Coast; at Tathra Wharf and the Eden tugs, similar communities form some of the most colourful temperate diving in NSW. Fish include schools of yellowtail and sweep, blue groper, red morwong, leatherjackets and bullseyes in the ledges, with wobbegongs and Port Jackson sharks resting beneath.
The depth range means Wonderland suits Advanced divers who want to see the colourful deeper reef, while Open Water divers can enjoy the upper ledges with a guide. The position has not been published and only the Marine Life Network summary is available, so the operator's briefing is the best guide. A torch helps bring out the colours. This is a good dive to request from Merimbula Divers Lodge when conditions allow, and it complements the shallow Empire Gladstone wreck and the Merimbula Wharf shore dive for a varied weekend. Ask when booking whether it is on the schedule. If it is not possible that day, Merimbula Wharf and the Empire Gladstone are reliable alternatives, and the Eden tugs are within reach for a deeper wreck dive.
