Meet the site
Woodman Point Groyne is a straightforward boulder-wall dive on the tip of Woodman Point, a few hundred metres from Ammo Jetty. The groyne extends the natural limestone point with large rocks that step down onto sand and seagrass, reaching about 9 m at the end. It is a useful fallback when other sites are blown out, because the two sides give shelter from different wind directions.
The rocks are the habitat. Look into the gaps for toadfish, porcupinefish, jumping blennies, grubfish and red-lipped morwong, with schools of drummer working the shallows. Colonies of bronze and orange zoanthids grow on the boulders, and patient divers find nudibranchs, including the occasional less common species, as well as octopus and small crabs. The seagrass meadows off the wall hold whiting, cobbler, stingrays and cuttlefish, and there are sometimes seahorses on the weed near the rocks.
The honest local view is that the groyne is an average dive: life is less varied than on Ammo Jetty's pylons and the deeper sand is silty. It is better suited to relaxed novice dives, skills practice, snorkelling along the wall or a calm night dive than to experienced divers looking for scenery. Combined with a first dive at Ammo Jetty it makes a reasonable morning at Woodman Point.
The point is shared with kite-surfers, anglers and walkers. Fishing line and tackle collect in the rocks and along the seagrass edge, so carry a cutting tool and check your gear as you go. On the plus side, the car park is close to the water, depths stay moderate and there is plenty of margin for a relaxed dive with a new buddy.
