Meet the site
Wright Island is a small granite island of about one hectare between the Bluff and Granite Island, named after William Wright, a headman of the Encounter Bay whaling operations in the 1800s. It is managed by the City of Victor Harbor, has a small sandy beach suitable for landing small boats, and is a popular summer fishing and swimming spot. It once had a little penguin colony of several hundred birds, but a 2013 survey found no active burrows. Underwater, the Marine Life Network describes a large, low rocky reef around the island in 5-6 m, with a maze of eroded undercuts and holes hidden in the weed. These shelter good marine life, and divers who poke into the undercuts can expect crabs, crayfish, blue devils, wrasse, magpie perch and leatherjackets. The surrounding weed and seagrass is habitat for seadragons, as at nearby Black's Reef and the Bluff. At only 5-6 m, the site is suited to long, relaxed dives, snorkelling and newer divers, and it is sheltered enough to be diveable on some days when more exposed sites are not. The main hazard is people: recreational fishers use the island heavily, so watch for lines and boats, and fly a dive flag. Wright Island combines well with Black's Reef on a short boat outing from the Bluff ramp, or can be the destination for a strong swimmer's shore dive on a very calm day. On summer weekends the island's beach can be busy with small boats, so a mid-week visit or an early start gives a quieter dive.
