Meet the site
The Zedora was a cargo vessel lost on 11 February 1875 when her cargo shifted in heavy weather and she was driven onto the Mewstones Reef, west of Gage Roads and Fremantle Harbour. Few details of the vessel survive in the sources used here.
Very little of her remains. The site covers about 10 m by 10 m in about 4 m of water and is heavily buried by sand. Divingwawrecks lists only what may be a section of keel protruding above the seafloor, a small unidentifiable fitting and a copper nail. It recommends the site as a quick snorkel rather than a dive.
The interest therefore lies mainly in the surrounding reef. The Mewstones hold typical shallow Perth reef life: buffalo bream, sweep, wrasse, herring cale and leatherjackets over kelp-covered limestone, with western rock lobster in the crevices. Visibility is often good because the reef is well offshore.
The reef is shallow and turbulent, and conditions change quickly in rising swell or wind, so it is a site for flat days only. It suits snorkellers and divers with a strong interest in shipwreck archaeology who are already in the Stragglers area, perhaps combining it with the Ulidia or the Stragglers dredges.
The wreck is protected, and even small items such as nails must be left in place. The WA Museum shipwreck database is the best source for the vessel's history. For most boats it is best treated as a brief stop on the way to or from the more substantial Stragglers wrecks, rather than a destination in its own right.
