Ask what causes remediation, an additional dive or non-certification. Clear performance thresholds protect the student from a card-first course.

Technical competence needs teammates, gas, cylinders, sites and ongoing practice. Prefer a pathway that can be sustained locally after the course.

Describe the goal in operationally useful terms

Begin the conversation with the environment and type of diving you hope to prepare for, your qualifications and recent experience. Do not open with a request to reach a particular depth as quickly as possible. The instructor needs enough context to discuss prerequisites, readiness and an appropriate progression.

Ask for the exact agency programme and how you can verify the instructor’s current teaching status for it through the relevant agency. General experience, a social-media profile or a different instructor qualification is not the same information. Record the programme name carefully so later comparisons refer to the same course.

Ask how learning and assessment work

Request an explanation of the training structure, preparation expectations, feedback process and assessment standard. Ask how the instructor handles a student who needs more time, and how extra sessions affect cost and scheduling. A useful answer describes a process rather than guaranteeing graduation on a particular day.

Discuss the intended equipment configuration before purchasing or modifying equipment. The instructor should identify which questions need manufacturer or service-provider input. This guide does not recommend a configuration, teach technical procedures or establish that an applicant is ready for technical diving.

Compare the complete training relationship

Ask what support is available after the course and how students are expected to consolidate learning. Clarify the difference between supervised training, organised experience dives and independent diving. These are separate arrangements, even if a centre advertises all of them together.

For a worked comparison, imagine two instructors with the same advertised programme. One quote includes specified preparation and feedback sessions; the other leaves materials, equipment and additional practice unclear. Request the missing details rather than assuming the lower price buys an equivalent service. Save the written answers and choose on the basis of an understood learning plan, not a promised maximum achievement.
