The entry point
PADI Tec 40 is the best-known TecRec transition course. SSI offers Extended Range Foundations as a concentrated skills workshop and Extended Range Nitrox or Extended Range programmes as capability-bearing steps.
Those names are not direct one-for-one equivalents. Compare maximum depth, permitted decompression, gases, number of stage cylinders and required configuration.
The middle of the pathway
PADI Tec 45 and Tec 50 progressively add depth, decompression and gas capability. SSI Extended Range and Technical Extended Range build toward deeper multiple-stop, multi-gas profiles, with Trimix variants.
A candidate should ask the instructor to draw the full local pathway, including which sites and gas supplies support every training dive.
What matters in Australia
Instructor currency, helium and oxygen supply, cylinder hire, boat access and suitable depth are the constraints. A theoretically elegant pathway is useless if the local centre cannot run the dives often enough to maintain competence.
Verify whether the same instructor actively mentors divers after certification and whether the centre supports the equipment configuration used on the course.
Choosing what suits you
There is no universal winner. PADI TecRec is easier to read as a depth-based ladder; SSI XR offers an attractive skills-foundation step and a broad integrated family.
