Oxygen, narcosis & breathing gases

Nitrogen narcosis and judgement

Narcosis can impair thinking and coordination at depth, including the judgement needed to recognise impairment.

Understand the risk

Effects can include inappropriate confidence, anxiety, slow responses or difficulty with tasks. Feeling comfortable does not prove that performance is normal. Individual experiences vary, so a memorable previous dive is not a reliable tolerance test.

THE VISUAL EXPLANATION

Nitrogen narcosis and judgement: what connects

Notice change · Communicate · Reduce exposure

Confidence

May be misleading

  • Use objective team checks

Task performance

May deteriorate

  • Reduce complexity and depth

Persistent symptoms

May have another cause

  • Seek medical assessment

Put the knowledge into practice

Plan conservatively for your training and experience. If impairment is suspected underwater, communicate and make a controlled reduction in depth with your team as trained, ending the dive when appropriate. Persistent symptoms after surfacing require medical assessment rather than being dismissed as narcosis.

PAUSE & THINK

What would you do?

A buddy laughs at a simple problem and cannot follow a familiar signal.

Reveal the discussion answer

Treat the behaviour change seriously and use the trained team response.

Frequently asked questions

Can I train myself to be immune?

Do not rely on supposed immunity. Familiarity with tasks is not proof that gas-related impairment is absent.
