Deep & technical diving risks

Why deeper diving changes the risk

Depth can combine faster gas use, greater breathing demands, impaired judgement and less time within no-stop limits.

Understand the risk

These pressures interact. A small equipment difficulty can take longer to solve when thinking is impaired, while a longer ascent requires more gas. The attraction of a wreck or wall does not reduce those demands.

THE VISUAL EXPLANATION

Why deeper diving changes the risk: what connects

More demand · Less margin · Better preparation

Gas

Used more quickly

  • Plan for the entire exit

Thinking

May be impaired

  • Reduce complexity

Ascent

Longer journey

  • Retain appropriate reserves

Put the knowledge into practice

Build experience gradually with appropriate instruction. Plan a shallower alternative and define limits before entry. Do not let the bottom, a guide or another diver become the depth limit by default.

PAUSE & THINK

What would you do?

A camera slips down a wall below the planned depth.

Reveal the discussion answer

Let the object go. Retrieving equipment is not a reason to exceed the plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is a deep specialty the same as technical training?

No. Recreational deep training does not automatically authorise staged decompression, cave entry or rebreather use.
