Immersion pulmonary oedema

Breathing difficulty in the water can be a medical emergency even when the gas supply is working.

Understand the risk

Immersion pulmonary oedema involves fluid accumulating in the lungs during immersion. Breathlessness, coughing and sometimes frothy or blood-stained sputum can occur. Similar symptoms may have other causes, so the response should not depend on making the diagnosis yourself.

THE VISUAL EXPLANATION

Immersion pulmonary oedema: what connects

Recognise distress · Assist exit · Get medical help

In-water distress

Not always a regulator fault

  • Take symptoms seriously

Exit

Assistance may be needed

  • Avoid unnecessary exertion

Recovery

Improvement can occur

  • Still obtain medical assessment

Concept relationships from this lesson. These are discussion points, not a dive profile or emergency treatment sequence. Read the cited sources; qualified review is pending.

Put the knowledge into practice

Signal for help, end the dive using trained assistance and leave the water as safely and promptly as possible. Call emergency services for breathing distress and provide trained first aid. Medical evaluation is needed even if symptoms improve after exiting.

PAUSE & THINK

What would you do?

A diver with plenty of gas becomes unusually breathless and coughs after surfacing.

Reveal the discussion answer

Treat this as a medical problem and arrange urgent assistance rather than blaming poor fitness.

Frequently asked questions

Can a healthy person experience IPO?

Yes. Apparent fitness does not rule it out. A clinician should assess symptoms and future diving suitability.
