Buoyancy and weighting

Stable buoyancy helps protect the diver, the buddy and the environment.

Understand the risk

Excess weight can increase reliance on the buoyancy system, while poor control can lead to unintended depth changes. New exposure protection or a different cylinder can change the required setup. A weight amount copied from a friend is not an assessment.

THE VISUAL EXPLANATION

Buoyancy and weighting: what connects

Assess weighting · Practise control · Monitor depth

Configuration

Suit and cylinder matter

  • Reassess after changes

Control

Depth should be deliberate

  • Practise without extra tasks

Environment

Avoid bottom contact

  • Keep awareness of surroundings

Put the knowledge into practice

Get an instructor to check weighting and control with the actual configuration. Practise descents, ascents and stops in suitable conditions. Do not solve a skills problem simply by adding more lead.

PAUSE & THINK

What would you do?

You switch from a thin wetsuit to a drysuit and keep the old weighting without a check.

Reveal the discussion answer

Arrange appropriate drysuit instruction and a supervised weighting assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Can good buoyancy reduce other risks?

It supports depth control, team awareness and manageable workload, but does not replace gas or medical planning.
