Build safer diving habits

Medication, alcohol and fatigue

Decisions about substances and tiredness belong before the dive, when changing plans is easy.

Understand the risk

Alcohol can impair judgement and coordination. A medicine’s effects and the condition it treats both matter underwater. A product that seems harmless on land is not automatically appropriate for diving.

THE VISUAL EXPLANATION

Medication, alcohol and fatigue: what connects

Check effects · Assess readiness · Choose rest

Alcohol

Impaired decisions

  • Avoid diving while affected

Medicine

Side effects and underlying illness

  • Discuss suitability with a clinician

Fatigue

Reduced attention

  • Rest or change the plan

Concept relationships from this lesson. These are discussion points, not a dive profile or emergency treatment sequence. Read the cited sources; qualified review is pending.

Put the knowledge into practice

Ask a clinician or pharmacist about medicines and obtain diving-medical advice when needed. Do not use a new remedy to force yourself through congestion or illness. Leave space in travel plans for sleep and recovery instead of arriving exhausted and immediately diving.

PAUSE & THINK

What would you do?

You feel sedated after taking a seasickness medicine for the first time.

Reveal the discussion answer

Tell the crew and do not dive while impaired. Discuss a future prevention plan with a clinician.

Frequently asked questions

Can a decongestant make an ear problem safe?

It does not establish fitness to dive. Congestion and medication effects need appropriate assessment.
