Technical capability in Australia clusters geographically and it follows terrain. Melbourne and the Geelong region have the densest concentration outside Sydney because Port Phillip Heads and the Ships' Graveyard give divers somewhere the training genuinely matters. Without that, technical instructors, gas blending and equipment support do not survive commercially.
For a diver assessing a technical facility, the single most useful habit is to stop treating "technical" as one capability. Teaching Advanced Nitrox is different from blending Trimix, which is different from supporting a particular rebreather with servicing and sorb, which is different again from being able to oxygen clean and hydro test your cylinders.
Gas is the constraint that most often determines whether a trip happens. Helium is expensive, supply fluctuates globally, and a business blending Trimix last season may not be this month. It should always be confirmed close to the date rather than relied on from a website.
Equipment supply matters too. Technical configurations — twinsets, manifolds, stage cylinders, sidemount harnesses, suitable regulators — are not stocked by every business, and hire availability for divers who do not yet own a full technical kit is worth establishing.
Specifically worth confirming: the technical agency and maximum course level; whether Trimix, helium and oxygen are available on site; CCR support and which units, plus sorb stock; cylinder oxygen cleaning and hydrostatic testing; stage cylinder hire; and whether DPV sales, service or hire are offered.
For technical divers new to Victoria, the Ships' Graveyard is the destination that justifies the training. Wrecks across a wide depth range, from accessible recreational profiles to depths requiring Trimix, mean a diver can progress on the same terrain rather than travelling for it.
