Spirit of Freedom runs expedition liveaboard itineraries from Cairns and Port Douglas to the northern Ribbon Reefs, Osprey Reef and the Coral Sea, and it is one of the small group of Australian operators servicing genuinely remote reef systems.
The itineraries are the product. A three-day Ribbon Reefs trip includes Cod Hole and the pinnacles of the northern reefs; longer Coral Sea itineraries reach Osprey Reef, an isolated atoll rising from very deep water with wall diving and visibility that routinely exceeds anything on the Great Barrier Reef proper.
Osprey in particular is the reason experienced divers book these trips. The walls drop vertically into open ocean, the water is exceptionally clear, and shark activity at established sites is consistent. It is a different category of diving from the reef systems reachable from shore in a day.
The dwarf minke whale season on the northern Ribbon Reefs, broadly June and July, is the other major draw. The interactions are conducted on snorkel under permit, with swimmers holding a surface line while the whales choose whether to approach — and they frequently do, repeatedly, for hours.
Nitrox is available and is genuinely worth using on itineraries involving repetitive multi-day diving at depth. Divers should confirm availability, cost and any certification requirement before boarding.
Because these are remote destinations, planning matters more than it does for a day trip. Confirm the specific itinerary and its certification prerequisites, rental equipment availability in your size, cabin configuration, and what medical and evacuation arrangements apply given the distance from shore. Trips are weather-dependent at the margins, and the more remote itineraries have less flexibility to substitute sites.
Osprey Reef in particular rewards divers who have built up some experience first. Wall diving in forty metres of visibility with no bottom in sight is disorienting for anyone who has only dived reefs, and depth awareness matters considerably more than it does inshore.
