Big Woody is a far-northern site visited on both Mike Ball and Spirit of Freedom expeditions. Mike Ball lists it among the Great Detached Reef sites with soft corals, fans and whips, while Dive Pacific's account of a Spirit of Freedom trip describes Big Woody on Wood Reef as a peninsula with a cave. Professional Dive Services lists a site called Woody's / The Drop on Wood Reef, which may be the same place. The peninsula shape gives the site a wall along each side and a point at the end where current concentrates. The cave adds interest – an overhang or cavern in the reef that can be viewed from the entrance, with soldierfish, sweepers and perhaps a resting shark inside. Soft corals, sea fans and whip corals grow on the walls, fed by the current. The far-northern reefs are rich in fish life, and a peninsula site like this attracts reef sharks, trevally and barracuda on the point, with reef fish and invertebrates on the walls. The name confusion between Great Detached and Wood Reef reflects how few divers visit these reefs and how operators use their own names. Coordinates and depths are not published. Big Woody suits experienced divers on a far-northern expedition. The cave should be viewed only from the entrance unless the guide says otherwise, as no penetration training is assumed. Getting here is itself an expedition: the far-northern reefs lie hundreds of kilometres north of Cairns, are visited by only a handful of liveaboards in the October–December window, and are many hours from medical help, so divers should be current, self-sufficient, carry an SMB and audible signal, and dive conservatively.
