Chain Bommies is named for the large chain wrapped around the bommies, a remnant of one of the many shipwrecks on Lady Elliot's reefs, according to the Oceanity guide. The island's reefs claimed numerous vessels in the nineteenth century, which led to the lighthouse being built in 1873. The chain, now encrusted with coral, gives the site historical interest, and the bommies host reef fish and invertebrates typical of the western side. Treat the chain as a heritage item: do not pull on it or remove anything. Lady Elliot's reef is the southernmost part of the Great Barrier Reef, and its mix of sheltered western sand plains and exposed eastern walls means almost every site is within a few minutes of the next. Manta rays are most abundant from about May to August, humpback whales pass from July to October, and turtles nest on the island's beaches from November to March, so the same site can feel quite different depending on the season.
