Meet the site

Coral Gardens on the western side of Lady Elliot Island is a shallow reef, mostly under 8 m, that the resort describes as a virtual aquarium. Marine life writers call it an easy dive on the shallow parts of a coral ledge and a good beginners' dive, and the Oceanity guide to the island's sites rates it as having the prettiest coral structures on the island, with large swim-throughs, archways and big corals. The shallow, vibrant ecosystem is busy with juvenile fish schools, big-eye trevally, fusiliers, garfish, surgeonfish, unicornfish, coral trout and blue-green chromis, and schools of brass-striped barracuda often hang off the ledge. Dolphins have been known to interact with divers here. The swim-throughs and archways are open and short, giving newer divers an introduction to reef structure without real overhead risk, while photographers enjoy the bright light and colourful coral. Coral Gardens is sheltered from the prevailing south-easterlies and dived frequently, making it an easy option for a first dive at Lady Elliot or for training. It lies south of Maori Wrasse Bommie and Shark Pool, with Spiders Ledge further north. It should not be confused with Heron Island's Coral Gardens, a quite different site on the Wistari Channel wall. Because it is shallow and close to the island, Coral Gardens also works well as a snorkel from the dive boat when conditions are calm, and it is a good place to check buoyancy and weighting on the first day before visiting the deeper western sites. Turtles often rest under the coral ledges, and turtle numbers increase in summer when adults gather to nest on the island's beaches.
