Meet the site
Fifeshire Reef is the easy reef of the Terrigal boat dive menu. The Terrigal Underwater Group calls it a pretty little reef off North Avoca teeming with fish and macro life, and the Marine Life Network's Terrigal list describes it as a shallow reef that offers a nice dive, particularly for newer divers. Muddy Puddle Diver notes that it is not far from the boat ramp and close to shore, which is exactly why operators reach for it on days when the offshore reefs or the ex-HMAS Adelaide are out of reach. Most of the reef sits between about 12 and 20 m, with McFadyen's GPS list giving 21 m at the mark. The terrain is kelp-covered sandstone with low ledges, boulders and gutters, grading to sand at the edges. Under the kelp and in the cracks is where the site earns its reputation: nudibranchs, flatworms, decorator crabs, sea hares and small cryptic fish are common, and photographers with macro lenses can spend an entire dive on a few square metres of reef. Fish life is typical of the inshore Central Coast - yellowtail, silver sweep, mado and one-spot pullers over the kelp, red morwong and eastern blue gropers around the boulders, and the occasional wobbegong, Port Jackson shark or fiddler ray on the sand. Cuttlefish are regular in winter. Fifeshire does not have the drama of Foggy Cave or the scale of the Adelaide, and the Marine Life Network notes that the deeper San Francisco Reef nearby has better fish and sponges. But as a shallow, forgiving dive with short transit and good bottom time, it is valuable - for training, for newly certified divers building confidence, for a relaxed second dive, and for a sheltered option when the swell is up.
