Meet the site
Goggle Gardens is a relatively recently named Ribbon Reef site between Ribbon Reefs No. 9 and 10. Mike Ball's material calls it Goggle Gardens; Spirit of Freedom and Nigel Marsh's reports spell it Google Gardens. Mike Ball's photographers' guide treats it together with neighbouring Coral Kingdom, but its Far Northern Reefs itinerary lists them as separate dives.
Nigel Marsh, writing about a Spirit of Freedom minke trip for Divernet, described it as a recently discovered site with a maze of coral canyons in the shallows, and in Scuba Diver magazine as spectacular and very healthy coral gardens. The canyons are formed by walls of branching and plate coral with sandy channels between them, so the dive has more structure than a flat garden. Light filters down into the gaps on sunny days, making it a good wide-angle site.
The standout animal is the broadclub cuttlefish. Several usually patrol the gardens, and Marsh describes them flashing a technicolour range of colours at divers. Giant clams, nudibranchs, rock cods, lionfish, sweetlips, batfish and parrotfish are common, along with the chromis and damselfish that crowd the Acropora. The shared fauna with Coral Kingdom means bumphead parrotfish, whitetip reef sharks and lagoon rays are also likely, and manta rays pass in summer.
It is a shallow, easy dive suitable for all levels and a good second or third dive of the day, when a long, bright, relaxing hour is wanted. Snorkellers also do well here, since much of the best coral sits within a few metres of the surface and the canyons are easy to follow from above.
