Meet the site
Half Way Wall is the gentler face of Osprey Reef. Spirit of Freedom describes bommies rising from about 20 m on the edge of a drop-off that falls more than 1,000 m, with schools of trevally, tuna and sharks. Underwater Atlas calls it the gentler alternative to the atoll's more demanding drift sites, with occasional hammerhead visits.
The layout makes for a relaxed dive by Osprey standards. The bommies on the lip of the wall give divers a structure to explore and a visual reference, while the wall beneath them provides the thrill of the abyss. Currents here are usually lighter than at the horns, so it is possible to take your time around the bommies, look into their crevices and watch the traffic in the blue.
Schools of trevally sweep along the wall, dogtooth tuna make fast passes, and grey reef and whitetip sharks patrol. Hammerheads occasionally cruise in from deeper water, a reminder of the site's oceanic setting. On the bommies themselves, soft corals, sea fans and schooling anthias add colour, and the usual reef fish of butterflyfish, angelfish, triggerfish and surgeonfish are present in numbers.
Half Way Wall is a good first dive at Osprey for divers who want to get used to wall diving in blue water before tackling the drifts, and a good choice when conditions on the exposed sides are marginal. Visibility is often 30 m or more. It suits intermediate divers with good buoyancy and attention to depth, and the bommies make it a better photography site than the plain walls.
