Meet the site
Hanson Bay is a picturesque south-coast bay at the western end of Kangaroo Island, close to Flinders Chase. It has two main beaches, and Tourism Kangaroo Island singles out the first as the safest for snorkelling, listing eight-armed sea stars, blue-throat wrasse, turbo shells and sea sweep. The Marine Life Network describes a shore dive of 5-10 m, with a long walk, on the exposed southern coast, with stingrays, sweep, salmon, trevally, groper, drummer, bream and abundant invertebrates.
The reef here is granite and limestone, carpeted with kelp and brown algae, with sand channels where rays rest and schools of salmon and trevally sweep through. Turbo shells and sea stars are thick on the rocks, and the southern exposure means big, healthy kelp and a sense of wildness. Visibility is often very good when the swell drops.
The warning attached to Hanson Bay matters more than the species list. Although it is a partly protected bay, it is prone to rips and undercurrents, and the south coast's swell is relentless. On most days it is a beautiful place to look at rather than enter. When a genuine calm arrives, it offers one of the few accessible south-coast shore dives on the island, with a good chance of seeing large fish. There are no facilities, and help is far away. It suits experienced shore divers and strong snorkellers who can judge rips. Hanson Bay is also close to the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and Kelly Hill Caves, so a calm-day dive fits easily into a day exploring the western end of the island. Bring all water and supplies.
