Meet the site
Helix Reef is a compact outer mid-shelf reef, just over 1 km of reef frontage, lying about 16 nm east of Lodestone and close to Keeper. It is zoned Marine National Park (green), so no fishing is allowed, and it has a quite different look and feel from Lodestone: rather than turquoise lagoon water over sand, Helix is surrounded by deeper, darker blue water and its slopes fall away steeply. That steep gradient is the site's character. The reef face drops quickly from the crest, making anchoring difficult except on the western, inside edge, where boats find reliable holding. From there divers follow a sloping wall and reef face with good coral growth, sea fans and whips on the deeper sections, and a busy upper slope of hard corals. The North Queensland Underwater Explorers Club notes prolific fish life, including true clown anemonefish in their hosts, ribbon eels in the rubble and oriental sweetlips under ledges, and the green-zone protection shows in the numbers of trout and larger reef fish. Because of the deeper surrounding water, pelagic visitors are more likely than at the inshore reefs – trevally, mackerel and reef sharks patrol the edges – and visibility is often better than at Lodestone or John Brewer. On the other hand, current can run along the face, and there is little shelter when the south-east trades blow. Helix is not on the everyday rotation. Adrenalin Snorkel & Dive runs it as a scheduled special trip, and clubs visit on calm days. For divers who know the regular reefs, it offers a slightly wilder, deeper-water feel within day-trip range of Townsville, with the benefit of full green-zone protection.
