Yongala Dive operates from Alva Beach near Ayr and exists for one reason: it is the closest access point to the SS Yongala, widely regarded as one of the best wreck dives in the world.
Geography is the entire competitive advantage. Departures from Ayr involve a substantially shorter boat transit than from Townsville, which means less time steaming, less exposure to sea conditions on the way out, and more of the day available for diving. For divers prone to seasickness, this difference is not trivial.
The Yongala is an advanced dive and should be approached as one. The wreck runs to roughly thirty metres, current is frequently significant, and the site sits on an otherwise featureless sand plain twenty kilometres offshore with no shallow reef to ascend onto. The marine life is extraordinary precisely because the wreck is the only structure for a long way in any direction — Queensland gropers, rays, turtles, sea snakes, dense schooling fish and pelagics all concentrate on it.
It is also a protected historic site and a gravesite. All 122 people aboard died when the ship was lost in a cyclone in 1911, penetration is prohibited, and nothing may be removed. None of this limits the diving meaningfully, since the marine life is on the outside.
Accommodation on site means divers can stay and dive over consecutive days, which is the sensible way to approach a weather-dependent offshore site — a single booked day is a gamble, two or three is a plan.
The most important thing to establish is the current experience requirement. Operators impose their own minimums and these are worth asking about honestly rather than working around: recent depth experience, comfort in current, ascent control without a reference line, and gas consumption at depth all matter more here than a certification card does. Nitrox availability and the specific mixes carried are also worth confirming, as the profile suits it well.
Winter generally produces the most settled seas at the Yongala, though the site is exposed year-round and trips are cancelled regularly. Anyone travelling specifically for the wreck should plan at least two or three available days rather than booking a single date and hoping the weather cooperates.
