Meet the site
John Brewer Reef is the Townsville reef most visitors see, and its sheltered lagoon is the reason. The reef encloses a large lagoon lined with gullies, bommies and reef walls, with shallow coral gardens at 4–6 m for snorkelling and deeper sections to 12–18 m for scuba. The Marine Life Network describes great visibility and good fish life – turtles, reef sharks, pelagic schools, damselfish, surgeonfish, parrotfish, fusiliers and coral trout – on a reef that has been recovering since a crown-of-thorns outbreak in 2003 and bleaching in 2016. In 2023 MOUA added the Ocean Sentinels: eight sculptures, each about 2.2 m tall and weighing 1–3 tonnes, set in about 5 m of water a short swim from the Coral Greenhouse. They portray people linked to the reef's science and stewardship – coral taxonomist J.E.N. 'Charlie' Veron, coral-spawning pioneer Peter Harrison, coral ecologist Katharina Fabricius, restoration scientist David Vaughan, giant-clam specialist Richard Braley, the 1928–29 Great Barrier Reef Expedition leader Sir Maurice Yonge, Wulgurukaba and Yunbenen leader Jayme Marshall, and young activist Molly Steer. Their shallow setting means snorkellers can see them clearly, and they are slowly gaining coral and algal growth. The coral gardens themselves feature branching Acropora, staghorn and plate corals, with abundant damsels, butterflyfish and batfish. Deeper, the lagoon gullies and bommies give divers topography and more chance of turtles, reef sharks and trout. The reef's modern history adds interest: in 1988 the Four Seasons floating hotel was moored here, a seven-storey, 200-room structure that failed commercially within a year and was towed away. Today John Brewer is a reliable, sheltered choice for snorkellers, Discover Scuba divers and certified divers alike, and the combination of reef and art makes it the standard Townsville reef day.
