Meet the site
Jubilee Point is the headland between St Pauls Beach and Diamond Bay on the Sorrento ocean coast, and the reef around it is a labyrinth. The Scuba Doctor's description – many curving gutters and alleyways around the reefs – captures it: the limestone platform breaks up seaward into a series of parallel and curving channels a few metres deep, walled with kelp-topped rock and floored with sand and cobble, opening into wider gutters and ledges at 5–10 m off the point. The channels funnel fish: schools of sweep, zebrafish and old wives move through them with the surge, magpie perch and wrasse hold in the eddies, and the undercut walls shelter Port Jackson sharks, rock lobsters, abalone and the occasional blue devil. Weedy seadragons sit in the kelp at the gutter mouths and sea tulips and sponges line the shaded walls. It is one of the more rewarding back-beach reefs at a modest depth, but access from shore is the worst of the Sorrento group – a scramble east over the platform from St Pauls Beach – which is why the source recommends it as a boat dive; Back Beach Cray Reef lies a kilometre offshore to the south-west in 6–20 m for boats on the same day. Conditions govern everything: flat seas, swell under about 2 m with a long period, light northerly to north-easterly winds after several days of the same, and a willingness to walk away. Surge in the gutters is strong even on good days and a set can push a diver against the walls. Jubilee Point suits experienced divers with rock-platform skills, ideally with boat support, and photographers who want fish-filled gutters in clear water; it is not a snorkelling site except in exceptional calm.
