Meet the site
Marina Cove is the small rocky bay on the southern side of Linley Point, separated from the busier Fishermans Beach and its boat ramp by the point itself. The Scuba Doctor lists it under the alternative name Linley Point South and describes a boulder-strewn floor that deepens gradually as you move offshore, from 2 m at the rocks to about 8 m a hundred metres or so out. It is an extension of the same reef that makes Point Linley worthwhile, and it offers the same habitat – tumbled sandstone boulders with crevices and small overhangs, brown algae on the tops, seagrass and coarse sand between – with a little more sand and slightly less relief. Small fish and crustaceans are the staple: hulafish, bullseyes and magpie perch in the gaps, leatherjackets and old wives over the weed, decorator crabs, hermit crabs, shrimp and small octopus under the rocks. Rays and flathead settle on the sand and goatfish forage along the reef edge. Because the cove is set back from the ramp it is a slightly quieter entry than the rocks beside the ramp, and divers who want to do Point Linley without contending with launching boats sometimes start here and swim around the point. On its own it is a short, easy dive suited to Open Water divers, snorkellers and anyone wanting an unhurried look at a natural rocky shore a few minutes from Mornington. There is a caveat about the name: several places on the Peninsula are called Marina Cove, and this one is specifically the cove south of the Fishermans Beach ramp, not the marina at Blairgowrie or the cove at Safety Beach. Facilities are those of Fishermans Beach; there is nothing at the cove itself. It will not hold an experienced diver's attention for long, but as a companion to Point Linley or as a first shore dive it is pleasant and safe on the right wind.
