Meet the site
Middle Reef is a dome-shaped rock that rises from 32 m of water to within 9 m of the surface about 1.5 nautical miles from Adder Rock, off the northern side of Point Lookout. Manta Lodge says it is often described as an underwater Ayers Rock, which captures its shape: a single massive rounded outcrop standing alone on the seabed. It is rated for advanced divers because of its depth and the strong ocean currents that can sweep across it. The rock's isolation makes it a magnet for fish. Manta Lodge and marinelife.org.au list tropical fish, soft corals, nudibranchs and moray eels on its surface, larger fish and rays around it, and two resident Queensland groupers – giant, slow-moving fish that are the site's signature residents. Pelagic fish often school in the current off the rock, and wobbegongs and turtles are also likely. Because the top is at 9 m, divers can spend the deeper part of the dive on the flanks and then return to the dome for a relaxed shallower phase, making good use of their gas and no-decompression time. Visibility is typically 5-20 m. It is less frequently dived than Flat Rock or Manta Bommie, partly because conditions have to be right, which also means it rarely feels crowded. For experienced divers staying at Point Lookout for several days, Middle Reef adds variety and a good chance of meeting the resident groupers. Plan it for a day with light current and settled seas, and be prepared to abort if the current is running hard.
