Meet the site
Point Leo is best known as the Western Port surf beach, with a surf club, a large foreshore camping reserve and a rock platform running out from the point, and The Scuba Doctor lists the reef around that platform as a 3–8 m shore dive that is a safe, shallow site ideal for newcomers to both snorkelling and scuba diving. The bottom is a mosaic of weed and rock patches running out to about 8 m: low limestone and sandstone reef with brown algae and Sargassum on top, seagrass in the sandy gaps, and ledges and gutters that hold a good range of what the source calls marine critters. In practice that means the Western Port community – leatherjackets, magpie perch, old wives, wrasse, cowfish and zebrafish over the reef, decorator crabs, hermit crabs, octopus and abalone in the crevices, fiddler rays, stingarees and flathead on the sand, and cuttlefish inshore in winter. Weedy seadragons occur in the seagrass along this coast and are seen occasionally. The recommended route is a loop that starts on the eastern side of the platform, works out around the point and returns to exit on either side, which keeps navigation simple. Being on the ocean-facing side of Western Port's entrance the site gets swell that the bay piers never see, so 'safe and shallow' applies only on calm days; when the surf is up the point is a rip and no place for divers. The reserve's toilets, showers and kiosk make it one of the better-equipped shore dives on the peninsula's Western Port side, and the campground allows a weekend of diving Point Leo, Balnarring Reef and Flinders Pier from one base. It suits Open Water divers and snorkellers on calm days, families, and clubs wanting an easy reef with facilities.
